Elementary/Secondary Education Program
Program Authority and Administration
The Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) provides
funding to band councils or other First Nation education authorities to
support instructional services for status Indians residing on reserve.
This includes provisions for instructional services in on-reserve schools,
(First Nation-operated and federal), the reimbursement of costs of
on-reserve students attending provincial schools and funding for the
provision of student support services such as transportation, counselling,
accommodation and financial assistance.
The Indian Act sets out the Minister's powers to arrange for the education
of Indian children. The program has evolved over time as a result of
government policy and is operated under the board authorities provided
through the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development Act.
Objective
The objective of the Elementary/Secondary Education Program is to ensure
that eligible Indians have access to the education programs and services
available in public schools in the province in which the reserve is
located.
Eligibility
Indians or Inuit who normally reside on a reserve or Crown land.
Post Secondary Education Program
Program Authority and Administration
The Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) provides
Post-Secondary Education (SPE) support to eligible Indian and Inuit
students through the Post-Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP) and
the University College Entrance Preparation Program (UCEP) to assist First
Nation students with the cost of tuition fees, books and travel, and
living allowances, when applicable.
Support is also provided to post-secondary institutions for the
development and delivery of special programs for Indians through the
Indian Studies Support Program (ISSP). For example, the Saskatchewan
Indian Federated College (SIFC) receives funding for the development and
delivery of programs to First Nations students.
The PSE Program is funded as a matter of social policy by the Canadian
government. The program has evolved over time as a result of government
and is operated under the board authorities provided through the
Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development Act.
Students wishing to pursue post-secondary studies should contact the
Education Manager at the band office or the regional officer of DIAND.
Eligibility
Inuit and Status Indian students residing on or off reserve and ordinarily
a residing in Canada are eligible for the PSE program. Support is subject
to the selection criteria defined in the Band Council policy. Contact the
Education Manager for further information.
