Community Information Meeting: Mapping Survey with Terry Tobias
Chief and Council, along with our Lands and Resources Department, invite you to a community feast and information session regarding the upcoming mapping project: October 24, 2018 at 6pm in the Community Hall.
The Mapping Project:
The reputable, Terry Tobias, will interview our Land Users to obtain their living memory of Travel Routes. Travel routes are defined as any means that an individual has taken to actively harvest (i.e. truck, car, boat, canoe, snowshoe, etc). The data collected will be added to our collection of Use and Occupancy and will help our First Nation in business relations with resource extraction companies and in our Land Claim process.
This data will be added to the growing bank of our First Nation’s history. The data will help us better understand our use of the territory for purposes of negotiations with government and industry. It is essential that we document our own history.
Background on Terry:
Terry Tobias is arguably the best cartographer in Canada. Terry has served many First Nations creating Use and Occupancy maps and other styles of maps throughout Canada and Australia. Terry Tobias owns a private consulting firm named Tobias & Associates. For over 30 years he has been assisting Aboriginal communities with their Use and Occupancy research.
We strongly encourage everyone to attend this informative session. We are looking forward to an engaging and thorough session. Miigwetch!
